The Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority at Defiance College is the Eta Iota chapter. We were chartered in April of 1999. We had twenty wonderful women as charter members. Tri Sigma is a National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sorority. We are one of two NPC sororities on campus.
Please note that although the members of this chapter do attend Defiance College, this website is run and operated solely by the members of the Eta Iota Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. All of the opinions expressed here are independent from Defiance College.
Our Chapter History
In 1917 a group of women at Defiance College formed a female counterpart group to the male group the "Saints". These women were among the campus leaders, but they also enjoyed playing pranks and were informally known as the "Devils." At that time, sororities were banned on campus; so, they took the name God's Own Kids.
When the ban was lifted, the group renamed themselves Gamma Omega Kappa, and were officially recognized by the campus. In 1942, there was only one Gamma left on campus. Freshmen women began hearing stories that the Gammas were the "alive" girls, who had "given their housemother fits climbing down Throwbridge Hall fire escapes." This legacy carried Gamma Omega Kappa into the late 1990's.
In fall of 1998, Gamma Omega Kappa was encouraged to seek national affiliation. The women decided that Sigma Sigma Sigma was the organization that most closely fit with their values as Gammas. And so, the women of Gamma Omega Kappa brought this spirit of friendship, sisterhood and fun with them when they petitioned Tri Sigma, becoming the second NPC group at Defiance.
